The 2013 International Mummers Festival is taking place in Gloucester on the 13th and 14th December. Locations include the Gloucestershire Folk Museum, pub tours and processions through the streets.
There is a symposium on the Friday looking at all sorts of different aspects of mumming from performance and academic perspectives.
The Mummers Festival is well worth a visit.
Mumming is a traditional folk drama with roots in medieval court entertainment. There are many different kinds of mumming in the UK, for example:
- Mummers Plays
- Pace Egg Plays
- Plough Jags
The symposium on the 13th includes topics as diverse as mumming activities and history in Newfoundland, Commedia dell Arte and the sword dance of Shetland.
The Festival website is JUST HERE.
