The Blue Diamonds were formed in the Durham pit village of High Spen in 1926 by Fred Forster. When formed, all of the dancers were young boys. Sadly and unsurprisingly, not all of them are as young as they once were. To that end, High Spen have been enterprising and developed what they call “First Tuesdays“.
First Tuesdays are special practices held on the first Tuesday of every month. The purpose is to teach the High Spen Dance once a month to anyone who wants to learn it. The first of their ‘First Tuesdays’ was on May 5th and was a great success.
Newcomers were taught the stepping, how to tie and untie a lock (the Spen way) and three of the simpler figures from the first dance. There was a chance to view the High Spen exhibition and look at a few television clips from the early days right up to our appearance on Great British Railway Journeys in 2012.
The next First Tuesday will be Tuesday (I know!) June 2nd, at the Barley Mow Village Hall near Birtley, Chester le Street, DH3 2AJ.
