Location: The historic town of Richmond is a beautiful location for this year’s Longsword tournament. The centre of the town is its cobbled market place, where you will find both the Market Hall and Town Hall. Nearby is the very impressive Norman castle, run by English Heritage. There are ample food outlets in the town centre.

Registration: This takes place at 11am in the Market Hall. Please be there promptly.

Warm-up dances: These will take place between 11.30 and 1.30 in four locations – the Market Hall (where there is a beer festival), the Market Place (on a raised area adjacent to the Green Howards Museum), at the Black Lion pub in Finkle Street (just off the market square) and at the Ralph Fitz Randal pub (a Wetherspoon house). All are within a couple of minutes’ walk of each other. A detailed schedule of where and when you are dancing will be available on the day. Please do all you can to be at your dance spots punctually.

The Competition: This will take place between 2.00 and 4.00 at the Town Hall, which is a few yards up from the Market Hall. Tea, coffee and real ale will be available here.

Prize giving: The Mayor of Richmond will present prizes to the winning teams immediately following the competitions at the Town Hall. Details of results will be sent to competing teams following the event and posted on the SDU website.

SDU AGM: This will take place in the Town Hall immediately following the prize giving.

Parking: This can be difficult in Richmond, so you are advised to arrive in plenty of time. There are several pay and display car parks around the town. There are also short-stay (2 hrs) car parks in the town centre. Please note that the enforcement officers are extremely vigilant!

Indoor camping: This is at the Sea Scout Hall in Quakers Lane. Please check in at the beer festival before settling in. Although there is no parking at the Hall, you can park round the corner in Hurgill Road. The Hall is reasonably well-appointed but please note there are no showers. Breakfasts are available in Wetherspoons from 8am, approximately 400 yards away.

Campervans: Although there is no official site for the event, campervans do park overnight in the Yorke Square car park off The Green. This is sited at the foot of Cravengate, near the bridge over the River Swale. This is a pay and display car park, so make sure you buy a ticket.

Beer Festival: The event coincides with the local CAMRA beer festival, in the Market Hall. This is free to enter and, as well as being the SDU registration point, is also one of the warm-up spots. There will be around 30 real ales on sale, plus a range of real ciders and other drinks. The festival is open 5.00-11pm on Friday, 11.00-11.00 on Saturday and 11.30-5.00 on Sunday.

Music on Friday evening will be from King Cole, a Newcastle-based group of accomplished musicians playing traditional music from around the British Isles. On Saturday evening there will be an eclectic mix of electric-acoustic music from Richmond-based Steve Wade and friends, while on Sunday the Cockerton Silver Band will give a concert from 1.30. You can also watch the runners of the Richmond Castle 10k race, which is based at the Market Hall.
